Horizontal Pinstripe Beanie Pattern & Tutorial

Today I'm going to show you how to make my Horizontal Pinstripe Beanie. These hats are very simple and only take a few stitches to make a textured look. The pattern comes in 11 different sizes, from Preemie to Adult Large.

I really like these hats for men and boys. There are a lot of really cute hats out there for girls, but when it comes to the fellas, the styles are always simple and dull. The Horizontal Pinstripe Beanie gives some color and definition to an otherwise boring beanie.

Materials Needed:

#4 Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Caron One Pound)

Hook I/5.50 mm

Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:

st/sts = stitch/stitches

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

blo = back loops only

dc = double crochet

fpdc = front post double crochet

Notes:

  • Chains do not count as stitches

  • At the end of each row, connect with a slip stitch to the beginning chain.

  • Use whichever colors you want! For the purposes of this pattern, Color A will be the main color of the hat, while Color B is the pinstripes and brim.

  • Check your sizes. We all crochet differently, so you may have to adjust your hook to get the proper size. If your hat is a little short, simply add a row of sc to the bottom of the brim.

Here are a few visual notes to help you out:

The pinstripe rows are made by putting a single crochet (sc) in the back loop only (blo) of each stitch, as seen here:

The rows after the sc pinstripes are also done in the blo, although they are half double crochets (hdc). There may also be increases in these rows, as seen here:

You can change colors using whichever method you choose, but I like to bring the yarn up, so that I don't have to hide a bunch of ends. I also find this method sturdy, just be sure not to pull it up too tight. This is what it looks like from the inside:

I love the brim! It's just a combination of 2 stitches, but it makes a really nice texture. The first stitch is a double crochet (dc), followed by a front post double crochet (fpdc), repeated around.

An fpdc is worked as such: Yarn over, insert hook from front to back around post of stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook twice. Pictured above.

On following rows, you alternate dc and fpdc, as stated in the patterns. As the hat sizes get larger, so do the brims. Here is the finished hat made for the tutorial. Cute, huh?

Sizing (head circumference):

  • Preemie fits 12”

  • Newborn fits 14”

  • 0—3 Month fits 16”

  • 3—6 Month fits 17”

  • 6—12 Month fits 18”

  • 1—3 Years fits 19”

  • 3—5 Years fits 20”

  • 6—10 Years fits 21”

  • Adult Small fits 22”

  • Adult Medium fits 23”

  • Adult Large fits 24”

Note: Not everyone's head is the same, so you may want to measure before you make! :) For example, my husband has a head circumference of 20", so he would actually fit in a child's hat, rather than an adult's. And my pre-teen son has a head circumference of 23", so he would wear an Adult Medium.
