Gothic Rainbow Beanie Pattern & Tutorial

I'm not a fan of lengthy tutorials, but there is a bit of a story for this pattern. It all started on a cloudy December day when the sky was grey and the air was crisp. While I wistfully stared out of the window overlooking the garden.....just joking! Short story, I promise!

I had made hats for some good guy friends of mine for Christmas. They both love the rainbow motif, so I made some striped beanies, ending with their favorite colors for the brims -- red for one, blue for the other. Well, my godchild came over, saw the hats, and wanted one. When I asked her what her favorite color was for the brim, she said black.

(She's cool like that. :) She's a unique young adult who loves everything anime, fantasy, emo, and goth. She loves fiercely and is loyal almost to a fault. None of this pertains to the story, I just wanted to brag on her for a moment. She's a very cool human, and the world is better with her in it.)

Anyway, putting a black brim on an otherwise colorful hat just wouldn't look right. So, I changed things up a bit by adding black between each set of colors. Hence, the Gothic Rainbow Beanie was born! This super simple change made a huge difference in the look of the hat. I liked it so much, I decided to create a pattern for each size.

Without further adieu, here's the tutorial for the Gothic Rainbow Beanie! And if you would like a free PDF version of this pattern, click here.

Materials Needed:

#4 Worsted Weight Yarn in the following colors: Black, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple*

Hook I/5.50 mm

Tapestry Needle

*I used yarn that I had on hand:

Black in Caron One Pound

Scarlet in Caron One Pound

Pumpkin in Red Heart Super Saver

Sunflower in Caron One Pound

Kelly Green in Caron One Pound

Royalty in Caron One Pound

Amethyst in Red Heart Super Saver

Abbreviations:

st/sts = stitch/stitches

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

fpdc = front post double crochet

Notes:

  • At the beginning of each row, chain 1. Chains do not count as stitches

  • At the end of each row, connect with a slip stitch to the beginning stitch.

  • Check your sizes. We all crochet differently, so you may have to adjust your hook to get the proper size. If your hat is a little short, simply add a row of sc to the bottom of the brim.
