I came across the cutest pillow recently, and I knew I had to make it! Today, I'm going to review that pattern. Let's check out the Crochet Cottage Pillow!
As I told you in my last post, we have recently remodeled our home. To give our bedroom a personal design touch, I made some pillows for our bed. The white pillow is the Crochet Cottage Pillow by Meg Made with Love, which I will be sharing my thoughts on today. The blue pillow is the Textured Pillow Cover. I reviewed that pillow last time, and you can see it here.
Although the Crochet Cottage Pillow pattern seems to have been posted a few years ago, I've only seen it recently. It's absolutely beautiful, and I love the boho look that it has. I knew I
had to have it in my new bedroom!
I used the white yarn that I had on hand: Big Twist in White. I used a new skein, so that I could tell how much yarn this project would take.
I used the 14" Poly Fil Pillow Insert, which I've used a few times before. These pillows are good for decorative use, but if you plan on using the pillows more often, you may want to go with a type that will keep its "puffiness" a bit longer.
Notes on the pillow:
The pattern calls for an 18" pillow. I used a 14" pillow, but luckily Meg's pattern is made in a way that an intermediate crocheter could easily change it to fit any size square pillow.
This pillow cover will definitely show your pillow through, so make sure that you have a pillow that you like. The Poly Fil pillow that I used isn't the cutest, as it has a sort of netting over the pillow. But, I had bought a 2 pack for the Textured Pillow Cover, so I used what I had on hand, :) This is also why I used a 14" pillow, rather than an 18". I wanted the pillows to be the same in size.
On to the pattern...
There are really only 3 stitches that you need to know to make the Crochet Cottage Pillow...dc (double crochet), tr (triple crochet), and puff stitch, which Meg explains.
She also has a few pics showing different angles of the pillow and explaining some parts of the pattern.
I have to be honest, I was completely lost at the beginning. The first few rows were easy to understand, but I was so confused by rows 4-6 that I had my husband read a few rows to me. I don't think those rows were difficult, it was just so wordy that I was losing my place while working the row. (Also, I was having a bad day, so the confusion could have been caused by MS brain.)
BUT, once I understood where the increases were, I realized that the pattern was actually very easy. I no longer needed to read the pattern and I breezed through while watching a movie with my family. For the second panel of the pillow, I only needed to read rows 1 & 2 to make sure that I was starting the pillow correctly.
Since my pillow was 14" instead of 18", I simply continued the pattern until my panel measured 14". For me, that ended up being 13 rows in total.
In addition to changing the size of the pillow, I also added a last row of single crochet. That was just a personal preference; the pattern is great as is.
Lastly, when sewing the panels together, I used a whip stitch. It gave a really nice, rounded look to the pillow that I liked.
Although Meg's pillow has tassels, I didn't add them for the purpose of this review, since her pattern didn't have instructions on how to make them. I will probably add some later, though; I think the tassels give the pillow a more boho feel, which is what I like.
All in all, I loved this Crochet Cottage Pillow! My pillow came out super cute, and it looks great in my new bedroom!
