I needed yarn like my husky needs more fur, but when I came across Lion Brand's Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn, I had to try it out. I know it's not a new yarn, but there were colors that practically jumped into my arms. (Don't you hate it when that happens?) Plus, it was soft and squishy, AND I had a coupon. It was as if the universe wanted me to buy it.
I grabbed a few colors that I really liked and went home without any idea of what I would actually make. After thinking about it for a little while, I decided to design a simple infinity scarf with it. A day later, I had created the Chunky Cluster Infinity Scarf!
After writing up the pattern and making a few changes (and quite a few scarves), I decided to share it with you as a free tutorial. This scarf is thick and warm and works up quickly. It would be a great scarf to make as a beginner, as well as a seasoned crocheter.
So, here goes: a step-by-step tutorial with detailed pictures! And if you would like a free PDF version of this pattern, click here.
Materials Needed:
# 6 Super Bulky Yarn (about 260 yards)
Hook N/10mm
Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations:
st/sts = stitch/stitches
ch = chain
ch-sp = chain space
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
YO = yarn over
sl st = slip stitch
Special Stitches
Cluster = YO, insert hook into st, YO and and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook. YO and insert hook into same st, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook. YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Notes:
Instructions in * to * are to be repeated.
Using Lion Brand Wool Ease Yarn, the finished size is 64" around x 8" wide (32" long x 8" wide when laying flat). It took 3 balls of the print yarn, about 260 yards.
If you want your scarf longer, increase the chain until desired length. Make sure that your finished chain is an odd number.
If you want your scarf wider, increase the amount of rows before adding the sc border (Row 9).
Row 1: Leaving a tail for sewing, loosely ch 129. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and all others. Connect to 1st sc with a sl st, forming a circle. = 128 sc
Row 2: Ch 2, dc in same st. *Ch 1, sk next sc, cluster in next sc.* Repeat around to 2nd to last sc. Ch 1, sl st in beginning chain. = 64 clusters
Row 3: Sl st over to the 1st ch-sp. Ch 2, dc in same ch-sp. *Ch 1, cluster in next ch-sp.* Repeat around to last ch-sp. Ch 1, sl st in beginning chain. = 64 clusters
Rows 4 - 8: Repeat Row 3
Row 9: Ch 1, sc in same st. *Sc in ch-sp, sc in next st.* Repeat around. St st to beginning chain. Fasten off. = 128 sc
If you haven't done so yet, use the tail from Row 1 and sew bottom of scarf closed. Hide all ends.
And that's it! See? Super easy. :) If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments.
